Extech EX205 Review

The Extech EX205 - How Does It Stack Up To Other Multimeters

There is such a wide range of multimeters available to purchase these days, it can be quite confusing when it comes time to hand over your hard earned money. Should you get a clamp meter? do you need to measure as small as micro-amps and millivolts? and what about diode testing? We're here to take the guess work out of your decision and bring you full unbiased reviews of some of the most popular multimeters.

The first thing people will notice about the Extech 205 when they go to purchase it is the price. Coming in at around $40USD it is on the lower end of the scale, so it will suit people who won't be needing it for measuring large current loads or for those who work with high voltages, such as electricians. Extech have targeted this multimeter towards the home user, for example, people who like to work on the electronics in their cars or for those who enjoy tinkering with small electronic circuits.

The Extech 205 is not flawless by any means, it does feel a bit lower quality when holding it (and this is to be expected because of the low price), but it does read quite accurate and the auto-ranging will be definitely come in handy for those who are new to using a multimeter.

It comes with a few great feautres, such as the built in back light, which can be a lifesaver when working in dimly lit areas and also the flip out back is a great addition to keep the meter upright when taking your readings.

Our biggest gripe with this multimeter is without a doubt the continuity tester. When testing continuity, sometimes the "beeper" could hardly be heard. Not that big of a deal in the scheme of things, but if your hearing isn't the best, then we can see how this would cause a lot of annoyances.

Overall, if this is going to be your first multimeter then it is a great purchase, however if you're looking to upgrade, I would look to spend a bit more and go with a more reputable, quality brand.
